Welcome to your library!

-Why is the name spelled Enosburgh Public Library?
Enosburgh Public Library is owned by the Town of Enosburgh, although it is in the Village of Enosburg Falls.

-How old is the building?
Although the building was designed to look old so as to blend in with the other buildings in the village, it was only built in 1983.

-Why is the building out in back?
The building is set back behind the town clerk’s office because this parcel of land was donated to the town.

-Who is the boss of the library?
Townspeople elect trustees at town meeting. The trustees are responsible for keeping the library running and for writing policies or rules for library operation. The trustees hire the librarian who is in charge of the day-to-day operation of the library and for enforcing the policies. Mrs. Tatro is the librarian and she has been on the job since 1974.

-What happens at the librarian’s desk?
If you do not have a library card, you would get one from the person on duty at the desk. You would ask reference questions, find out the times the library is open and check out books at the desk. In order to use the computers you must sign in at the desk.

-What do I need to know about the card catalog?
All the books the library owns are listed on cards in the card catalog. Cards are filed alphabetically by title, author and subject.

-Who may use the computers?
People over age 18; people age 10-18 with their parents written permission; people under age 10 if a parent is with them. Young children may also use the two children’s computers in the children’s section. Everyone must sign-in at the desk and read the rules.

-May we print information off the computers?
The printer prints black and white only. Copies cost 10 cents each unless they are for a school project.

-How long may we keep a borrowed book?
The loan period is 2 weeks. You may renew the book for 2 more weeks.

-What if you don’t have the book I want?
We will attempt to borrow the book from another library, that’s called interlibrary loan.

-Does the library loan videos?
Yes! We have a brand new collection of videos and DVDs from PBS purchased with a grant from the VPLF/Freeman Foundation. We also have parenting and health related videos. Videos are loaned for 1 week only.

-Does the library have books on tape?
We have a good selection of books on tape and books on CD for adults. Books on tape and CD are loaned for 1 week only.

-Does the library have ‘talking books’ for people with vision problems?
We don’t have them in the collection but we have paperwork to get you signed up through the Vt Department of Libraries special collections section. The books are then mailed directly to your home.

-Does the library get a daily newspaper?
Yes! We get the St. Albans Messenger. We also subscribe to the weekly County Courier.

-Does the library loan magazines?
Yes! We have quite a good selection of magazines including: Smithsonian, National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News, Country Home, Country Living, Bon Appetite and Road & Track. For children we have National Geographic for Kids, American Girl and Sports Illustrated Kids. The library also has copies of the town and school reports.

-What is special about the bookcase nearest the front door?
That bookcase holds the newest books- best sellers, fiction and non-fiction.

-What’s the difference between fiction and non-fiction?
Fiction is not a true story and is written for entertainment only. Non-fiction is true and is for entertainment as well as enlightenment. Non-fiction is typically used for learning- for school reports or for adults trying to educate themselves. Non-fiction is shelved by numbers that correspond with the subject of the book. Biographies have their own section and are non-fiction. Books are divided the same way in both the children’s and adults sections of the library.

-Does the library have encyclopedias?
We have World Book and Encyclopedia Brittannica in book form. We also have Encarta on the Gates computers.

-What else is on the computers?
The best thing to do is sit down and look. There are lots of reading games for kids as well as Excel, Powerpoint, Streets and Trips, Publisher and more.

-What’s different about paperbacks?
In this library we don’t deliberately buy paperback books, our paperbacks are donated. Sometimes the books we order come to us in paperback if the publisher is out of hardbound copies. We generally do not catalog the paperbacks or put them on the shelves. Paperbacks have their own revolving racks called spinners. They are loaned for the same length of time as hardcovers.

-Are there other special collections?
We have a section of ‘western’ books, a science fiction collection and there are two bookcases of reference books. We have a Vermont books section and this includes rosters of veterans from our areas who served in the wars. We have a section for craft books and a brand new section for books and videos about parenting.

-Who owns the library?
If you live in Enosburgh and pay taxes in Enosburgh, YOU DO!!!
